SPOTLIGHT [2016]:
The OG without doubt, this 2016 Oscar-best-picture-winning film may even have been one of the inspirations for Tika ;)
Starring Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber and Michael Keaton, it's the true story of the 'Spotlight' investigative team at the Boston Globe in the early 2000s, and how it uncovered systematic sexual abuse by Catholic priests across countless Boston parishes. In this tense thriller, the team painstakingly find the patterns that link each abuser to dozens of victim-survivors – something Tika's tech platform does in the blink of an eye today.
SHE SAID [2022]:
The title refers to the common phrase "he said, she said" which is often used to minimize the experiences of victim-survivors. Starring Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan as New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, this is the story of how the worldwide #metoo movement moved into top gear in 2017. Another journalism story (maybe I'm biased – Ali M) and a good one, this twisty take shows the lengths Kantor and Twohey had to go to convince women to speak up about Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein.
PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN [2020]
Carey Mulligan again, this time starring as Cassie, a coffee shop worker by day who's living a secret double life by night. Cassie is set on avenging a terrible wrong done to her best friend in college. Disturbing and enthralling all at once, this film was considered "timely" when released in 2020 and was nominated for 5 Academy Awards, winning Best Original Screenplay.
